Some photos from The Gambia and Senegal!

We have taken over 4000 photos....so how can we possibly pick a few to post here? Here are a small sample of the past few days...
Catching the sun set from the roof of our vehicle in Niokolokoba Wildlife Park, Senegal...

On a boat safari....on the lookout for crocs, hippos, lions, cougars, wildebeast, antelopes, baboons...you get the idea!
An encounter with a Mandinka Warrior! Yikes!

Making many new friends! :)

American School, Spaghetti on Pizza and Chocolate Crepes for Breakfast

Who knew that Africa had all of these things to offer?!
Jakob went to an International School for the day yesterday and although he may not have been overly impressed to have been in school for a day during his winter break, it was a great experience to interact with kids from all over the world.

For dinner we went out to a restaurant that specializes in pizza and had spaghetti on pizza: two favourite foods in one!

Today began with breakfast at a Moroccan restaurant with Chocolate crepes (officially Jakob's new favourite breakfast food), then we went to the beach and topped the day off with dinner at our friend Kebba's. The latter requires a blog post all on it's own....so stay tuned.

Hopefully we will be able to post over the next few days, as we are about to venture "up-country" and into Senegal. If not, we will post again later next week.

It is an adventure of a lifetime!
Lots of warm wishes from The Gambia,
Cathy

A day at the NSGA...

Hi Everyone.
This is Jakob's mom, Cathy....guest-blogging from The Gambia.
We weren't able to connect to the internet earlier today and now Jakob is asleep, but I wanted to tell you what an amazing day we had!

Jakob and I went to the Nova Scotia-Gambia Association office and learned about a recent fund-raising event that the staff were able to undertake with start-up funds from Twoonies from Toubabs. We learned that this was the very first fundraising initiative by the Gambian staff, and what a success it was! Local musicians played and students from several schools in the area purchased tickets for a fun-filled Valentines' Day event. The surplus from that event will be put towards their next fund-raiser, which I am so excited about, but want to wait for them to disclose the details of this next event.

Jakob stood up in front of all the staff and told them what he has been doing to raise money for the NSGA. The thanks was amazing and they were all so impressed. The fact that Jakob has been raising this money from such a great distance and then got to deliver it in person was so touching. They also expressed the fact that they so rarely get to meet donors from Canada in person and that he had inspired them to work hard, and to raise funds from within The Gambia as well.

This afternoon he went to Wellingara School, a place that is near to my heart, and delivered soccer balls. It was a mob scene!! Another amazing experience....and tomorrow we will be going back to that school to help with a little school "make-over" project...doing some painting and other activities.

Hopefully we will be able to post tomorrow but there is presently no power and my laptop battery is running low.....
We are so very fortunate to be sharing this experience together in The Gambia.
Lots of warm wishes from "The Smiling Coast",
Cathy

We're in The Gambia!

Hi everyone,
We are finally in The Gambia and both my mom and I are really excited.
We are staying at a nice hotel with running water and a swimming pool and it's really nice.
We took a really long airplane flight to get here and it wasn't that good because there were crying babies, a loud man, and the flight was seven hours long. But, today overall was really fun. I am glad to finally be in The Gambia and I'll write back soon.
Good Bye,
Jakob

We're in London!

Hi everybody,
Today we arrived in London. It's really exciting! We spent a lot of time in the Subway (Underground) today. We went to the Tower of London, and we saw the Crown Jewels! But we didn't see them long because you have to go on a conveyor belt (from one end of the room to the other) and can not stick around to look at them slowly. We also went into the "Bloody Tower" and we learned about deaths in the Tower of London.
Tomorrow we will arrive in The Gambia.
Good bye for now!
Jakob

PS: We had hoped to upload some photos to share but the technology is acting up...but hopefully we will fix this soon! -Cathy

We leave today!

I can't wait! The only thing I have on my mind is leaving for London, England and then leaving for The Gambia. I love airplanes and that's why I am so excited for today!

Good Bye!
